Sébastien Pageot - In all likelihood

Sébastien Pageot takes us into the real, or rather into its representation, its illusion. In an increasingly fabricated world, where reality is becoming a mere alternative, the artist's gaze encourages us to think critically about its representation.

Questioning the boundary between reality and illusion

Sébastien Pageot photographs space, non-places, but also invested landscapes such as the coastline. His work questions the boundary between reality and illusion, highlighting the way we perceive and reconstruct our environment. As an ingenious handyman, the artist creates a plausible reality. The hand reconstructs reality, while photography blurs our perception. Far from the deceptive illusion, the image- maker does not conceal the graphic accidents, the grain of creation, the deliberate imperfections that give the image its substance. It is this resistance of the medium that invites a critical reading. In this way, the singularity of his gaze reveals the truth of the false and the illusion of the true, or rather of its representation. The illusion of the real becomes the real subject, making the point of view a cornerstone of photography. This “small step aside”, this shifting of the gaze, is the artist's strength.

See to understand?

The work of Sébastien Pageot falls into this hybrid zone between documentary and fictional narrative. His images are neither simple captures nor pure inventions; they unfold a narrative thread in which truth is constructed as much as it is questioned. In this sense, his work is salutary: it forces us to question our relationship to the image, to what we think we see and to what we are given to see. He deconstructs the obvious, reveals illusions, and in so doing, offers us an essential reflection on the nature of our gaze.

Rethinking our perception of the world

Far from a simple aesthetic exploration, his photography is an ongoing interrogation, an invitation to rethink our perception of the world. In this way, it is part of a contemporary approach in which the image is no longer simply a testimony, but a real challenge for critical reflection.
